Recently Orrapoora Alpacas had its first export of Australian alpacas to China. The export was to Qinghe, a rural area in the Altay District of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region close to the Russian and Mongolian borders in north-west China.
The alpacas will go into collective-style farms in Qinghe and the project forms part of the Xinjiang Government's intentions to provide the local people with an alternate source of income. Initially, a cottage style industry utilising the alpaca fleece is envisaged.
